George Tziarkas of Better Floors recommends the look of marble, slate and natural woods as an alternative to carpet.
And what makes the choice easier is that Better Floors, Wollongong, has a wide range of hard floor covering samples for customers to view.
"While carpeting is still the number one choice for the home, floor coverings such as woods and ceramics are becoming quite popular," he said. "For an example the bold, accented grain of natural oak flooring captures the elegance of natural woods and makes any room come to life."
Mr Tziarkas said although the look of hard floor coverings was popular, it's best suited to the rooms that received most use.
"Most modern homes are introducing this hard floor look, especially in the heavier wear rooms such areas at the kitchen, dining room and rumpus room," he said.
"The best thing about this product is that it's durable and easy to maintain. There are dozens of colours and designs to choose from and because demand is so high some floor makers are adding further colours to complement the existing range."
Better Floors has operated for 40 years and has been located in west Crown St since 1973.
